The Hawaii 2050 Sustainability Plan

Sustainability is about protecting the environment, creating agricultural self-sufficiency and self-reliance, and striving to live in a self-contained system in which systems are allowed to replenish themselves rather than only consuming economic, social and environmental assets in order to achieve progress.

Here is the definition of sustainability given by the Hawai‘i 2050 Sustainability Plan:

A Hawai‘i that achieves the following:

  • Respects the culture, character, beauty and history of our state’s island communities.
  • Strikes a balance between economic, social and community, and environmental priorities.
  • Meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The group also developed guiding principles of sustainability that focus on balancing economic, social, community, and environmental priorities; respecting and living within the natural resources and limits of the Hawaiian Islands; achieving a diversified and dynamic economy; honoring the host culture; making decisions based on meeting the present needs without compromising the needs of future generations; adopting the principles of the ahupua‘a system to guide resource management decisions; and allowing everyone, including individuals, families, communities, businesses, and government, to have a responsibility for achieving a sustainable Hawai‘i.
