It’s Easy Being Environmentally Friendly

What can you do for the environment.  Two things my mom told me when I was a kid, “Plant don’t kill,” and “Always leave it cleaner than you found it.”  With how much is changing in the world and how often we feel that we don’t have control of what is happening, there are definitely steps we can take to do our part.  Here are a few easy tips to make the planet a little healthier.

1. “Plant don’t kill.”  Many people clear properties to build houses or have big open lawns, but there are many advantages to leaving our surroundings in as pristine condition as possible.  The bigger your lawn, the more you have to mow.  If you are going to push mow, then you will get less hassle from the green police, but gas engine machines burn fuel and pollute.  Also, by clearing you remove potential habitations for surrounding wildlife and often remove plants that compliment the oxygen cycle.  If you have big open spaces, don’t be shy, plant some big shade trees or rose bushes.  You can also join a local arbor club, and plant trees in the community.

2. The second thing you can do is easy and satisfying.  Leave places cleaner than you found them.  If you take your kids to the park or stroll down the beach or have a picnic, make sure you take home what you brought, including your garbage.  Always bring some plastic grocery bags and spend ten extra minutes picking up some rubbish.  It is a very rewarding experience, and also shows your respect for the environment to your children and friends.  Hopefully they will pick up some of your habits.

3. Support local legislators that want to protect the environment.  Make sure they know they have your support . Fill out petitions, or better yet, help disseminate information about important issues and get others involved.  There are laws and regulations passed all the time that many times go unnoticed by an uninformed citizenry.  Become knowledgeable in your local and state governments (maybe that nuclear power plant won’t be built in your backyard.)
