Hawaiian Koa Forestry Project

Hawaiian Legacy Hardwoods (HLH) is planting 1.3 native Hawaiian Koa trees on the HLH plantation just north of Hilo. The HLH project is devoted to the conservation of Koa while providing the opportunity for eco-minded investors to make ethical profits through environmental stewardship. Because Koa is a native Hawaiian resource with global demand, the opportunity to take part in its conservation opens up a larger appreciation for Hawaii and its gifts to the world.

This project is important for both present and future generations of Hawaiians for its commitment to the conservation of a precious Hawaiian resource as well as creating wealth through a sustainable business model. HLH wants to help lessen the depletion of Koa resources in the Islands by planting Koa. The trees will eventually be harvested at maturity (25 years). On the surface, this may sound counter-intuitive, though by planting the trees for harvesting, it takes the pressure off of existing and natural growing forests and continues the cycle of carbon sequestration for generations to come. The harvested Koa from the HLH site will be used by local woodworkers and artisans for utilitarian purposes such as crafting musical instruments or furniture.
